چکیده

We consider the framework of Parameterized Complexity and we investigate the issue of which problems do admit eecient xed parameter parallel algorithms. In particular, we introduce two classes of eeciently parallelizable parameterized problems, PNC and FPP, according to the degree of eeciency we want to obtain. We sketch both some FPP-algorithms solving natural parameterized problems and a useful tool for proving membership to FPP based on the concept of treewidth. We then focus our attention on parameterized parallel intractability and prove that a necessary condition for a parameterized problem to be complete for the class of sequentially xed parameter tractable problems (with respect to reductions preserving membership to PNC) is that it is not in NC for some xed value of the parameter (unless P = NC). Finally, we give two alternative characterizations of both PNC and FPP and we use them to prove the PNC-completeness of two natural parameterized problems.

Plan Reordering and Parallel Execution - A Parameterized Complexity View

We reconsider the optimization problems for partial-order and parallel plans previously studied by Bäckström (JAIR, 1998), but use parameterized complexity to get a more fine-grained picture. Problems we study include the following: I Can we deorder/reorder the actions of a plan optimally? I What is the optimal parallel execution length of a plan? Plan reordering: to change the order of actions...

On the Parallel Parameterized Complexity of the Graph Isomorphism Problem

In this paper, we study the parallel and the space complexity of the graph isomorphism problem (GI) for several parameterizations. Let H = {H1,H2, · · · ,Hl} be a finite set of graphs where |V (Hi)| ≤ d for all i and for some constant d. Let G be an H-free graph class i.e., none of the graphs G ∈ G contain any H ∈ H as an induced subgraph. We show that GI parameterized by vertex deletion distan...

Fast Parallel Fixed-parameter Algorithms via Color Coding

Fixed-parameter algorithms have been successfully applied to solve numerous difficult problems within acceptable time bounds on large inputs. However, most fixed-parameter algorithms are inherently sequential and, thus, make no use of the parallel hardware present in modern computers. We show that parallel fixed-parameter algorithms do not only exist for numerous parameterized problems from the...

Parameterized Complexity of Independence and Domination on Geometric Graphs

We investigate the parameterized complexity of Maximum Independent Set and Dominating Set restricted to certain geometric graphs. We show that Dominating Set is W[1]-hard for the intersection graphs of unit squares, unit disks, and line segments. For Maximum Independent Set, we show that the problem is W[1]-complete for unit segments, but fixed-parameter tractable if the segments are axis-paral...

Distributed selectsort sorting algorithms on broadcast communication networks

In this paper, a distributed selectsort algorithm and a parameterized selectsort algorithm are presented to be applied on distributed systems for cases when N >> P where N is the number of elements to be sorted and P is the number of processors in the system. The distributed system considered in this paper uses a broadcasting channel for communication between processors. We show that the number...
